Permanent Magnet Brakes from KENDRION

High power density and precision

Kendrion permanent magnet brakes for integrated installation in servo motors and industrial robots

Permanent magnet brakes are mainly used in applications where very high-power density is required. Typical examples are powerful servo motors, high-quality machine tools, robots and wind turbines. Wherever precision is required, or high ambient temperature requirements exist, permanent magnet brakes are the first choice of our customers.

The primary task of the brake is to hold large loads. The backlash-free shaft-hub connection ensures that very high positioning and holding accuracies can be achieved by the drive unit. Another important task is to bring the load to a standstill quickly in the event of a power failure. Permanent magnet brakes achieve very high emergency stop numbers in this case due to their unique design. Furthermore, the user does not have to pay attention to whether the brake is installed in a vertical or horizontal position, as the special rotor design opens the brake absolutely residual torque-free at this point as well. Thus, permanent magnet brakes are particularly suitable for applications where, as a rule, no abrasive dust may be generated by start-up cycles.

Permanent magnet brakes are mainly integrated into the motor. However, mounting solutions with low IP protection class requirements are also possible.

As a full-line provider, we are constantly developing our products and adapting the product portfolio to market requirements. In addition to off-the-shelf brakes, we also offer customer-specific brake solutions and support our customers in selecting a suitable brake solution.

FAQs: Permanent Magnet Brakes

How do I decide between the PM Line and the High Torque Line?

The decision depends on required torque level, torque consistency and ambient temperature range.

If higher torque capacity, increased torque stability or operation below -5°C is required, the High Torque Line is the appropriate choice.
For standard industrial torque requirements and operating conditions, the PM Line is sufficient.

What are the main differences between the PM Line and the High-Torque Line?

1. Torque performance

The High Torque Line delivers higher torque and improved torque consistency under operating conditions.
The PM Line provides stable torque performance within standard industrial requirements.

2. Operating temperature

The PM Line operates within a standard range of -5°C to +120°C.
The High Torque Line extends the lower temperature limit as follows:
- Standard version: -15°C to +120°C
- Optional version: -40°C to +120°C.

The extended lower temperature capability makes the High Torque Line suitable for colder environments.

3. Power density

The High Torque Line provides higher power density due to its optimized magnet system.
The PM Line corresponds to standard industrial power density.

Performance characteristics that are identical in both lines:

  • Residual torque-free operation

  • Wear-free operation in all mounting positions

  • Easy, stress-free mounting

  • Service-friendly application

There are no differences in these aspects.

Is there a compact PM brake variant and how does it relate to the High Torque Line?

Yes.

In addition to the Classic PM Line, Kendrion offers the Slim PM Line, which was developed specifically for applications with reduced installation space.

The Slim PM and High Torque Line are based on a common permanent magnet technology with an identical motor interface. This concept is known as ONE Technology and enables flexible configuration of servo motors across different torque levels without changing the motor design.

Thanks to this common interface, the Slim PM can complement the High Torque Line within coordinated servo motor concepts.
