2018 American Cancer Society's - Strides Against Breast Cancer Event
Making a Difference
Mishawaka, 2018. The month of October has special meaning for many, one such meaning is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink is the theme and Kendrion Mishawaka was included in taking action. Dressed in bright pink, long sleeve Kendrion sponsored T-shirts, 12 members of our Kendrion Mishawaka team hit the sidewalks at Central Park in Mishawaka to participate in a 5k walk on October 6 to bring awareness and show support for breast cancer survivors and those currently battling this nasty disease. We were not alone, we joined several hundred walkers to raise over $57,000 dollars for our community and the battle against cancer.
Our Kendrion Mishawaka Team raised $1,952.00, which was quite impressive since we almost doubled our goal of $1,000. We were confident our team could raise $500 and Kendrion, as a company, agreed to match our efforts. The social committee presented a fundraising plan to management that included games, such as Bra Pong and balloon darts. The games were enjoyed by all and everyone walked away with a variety of participation gifts and a smile, knowing they are helping those in need while having fun at the same time. Book sales, pink piggy-banks to gather that loose change and make your own parfait events continued through the month of September to support our efforts.
During the final week before the walk, our company-sponsored luncheon pushed us over the top and into one of the top team fundraising spots. Not too shabby for our first walk, Kendrion came in at 8th out of 113 teams. Our own Karyn Dettling was Kendrion’s top fundraiser with $727.00! Way to go Karyn!! When asked why Karyn decided to participate, she said: “Like so many others, breast cancer is a very personal cause for me. Raising funds for groundbreaking research, and services for people dealing with breast cancer gives me the chance to make a difference. I believe that there will come a day where the pain caused by breast cancer is a thing of the past. And until it arrives, I’m walking to inspire hope to those facing the disease and raising money for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event to help save lives from breast cancer”.
Every day, the American Cancer Society helps people take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early when it is easiest to treat. They provide free information and services when and where people need it throughout their journey to get well. They are investing in innovative research to find, prevent, and treat breast cancer.
Timing is everything, a phrase that is often shared. For the employees at Kendrion Mishawaka, that phrase rang true. This year was different, we had two team member affected by cancer. This year, we were going to make a difference.
And this year we did!
